Abstract
Patients suffering from postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) often experience ineffective pain relief from standard medical therapy. If the pain is severe and shows little improvement, additional pain management should be considered. Supraorbital nerve block and pulsed radiofrequency treatment can be of help in treating PHN. Here we present four cases of medically intractable PHN that were treated with ultrasound-guided supraorbital nerve block (UGSONB) and one case that was treated with ultrasound-guided pulsed radiofrequency treatment (UGSOPRFT). Three of the four cases treated with UGSONB showed satisfactory pain relief for more than 12 months, without any further interventions. The fourth patient, who experienced short-term pain relief from the UGSONB, was then treated with UGSOPRFT; the patient experienced pain relief for more than 6 months and reported no complications in follow-up examinations. Therefore, UGSONB and UGSOPRFT can be considered in cases of medically intractable supraorbital neuralgia.
